Veteran Hong Kong musician Michael Lai dies at 73

Hong Kong's veteran musician Michael Lai died on Sunday morning at age 73. 

According to local media in Hong Kong, Lai was admitted to hospital in May after suffering from pneumonia. 

Born into a musical family – his father was a composer, and his mother was a writer – Lai devoted his life to music. He wrote many popular classic songs, including "The Great Wall Never Falls," "Rouge," and "Once Upon an Ordinary Girl."

Lai also acted in many household TV dramas such as "The Great Devotion" and "Aren't the Kids Lovely?"

His songs also boosted the popularity of famous pop stars including Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui.

News of his death sparked an outpouring of grief on social media with over 100 million views. 

"The man who created and witnessed a great era Hong Kong's music history has gone," commented fans on Weibo.
