Hong Kong has been in the grip of social unrest since mid-June. Many believe the anti-government protests are being sustained through support from outside China. Most notably, the United States, which this week signed into law an annual requirement to assess Hong Kong's level of autonomy under Chinese rule. Beijing criticized the law and slammed Washington for meddling in the region's internal affairs.
