Chinese customs intercepted and ordered the return of an illegal shipment of 23.71 tons of solid waste in Dalian City, northeast China, on November 27. It began importing solid waste as a source of raw materials in the 1980s, and became the world's largest solid waste importer for years. Given the rising public awareness for environmental protection, it issued a ban on hazardous waste import on January 1, 2018.
