Awkwafina said on the stage, "Oh my god. I never won anything. I can't even win an argument in the Instagram comments."
"I would like to thank grandmas everywhere for spoiling us, for loving us and for believing us," she added, who's previous works include the all-Asian "Crazy Rich Asians."
The best documentary went to "American Factory," which tells a Chinese glass manufacturer invested in the State of Ohio, the U.S. and reopened the deserted former General Motors plant as glass factory.
The Gothams, now in their 29th year, are the premier New York gala for independent film. A recent stretch of Gotham winners went on to land best picture at the Academy Awards, including Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight," Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" and Alejandro Inarritu's "Birdman."
