At least four people were killed and many others injured on Friday when a residential building collapsed in Embakasi in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Friday morning, local media reported citing police.

Nairobi Regional Commissioner Wilson Njenga confirmed 29 people have been rescued and taken to the hospital, according to the report.

The Kenya Red Cross said 11 people had been rescued by late afternoon, about five hours after the six-story building collapsed.

An unknown number of people remained trapped in the debris with voices of children being heard under the rubble.

There were reportedly 57 single rooms in the building.

Forty-nine people died in 2016 when another building collapsed during a heavy night-time downpour in a poor neighborhood.

The latest incident happened in the overcrowded Eastlands part of the city, near the scene where a seven-story building also collapsed in 2017.
