Not many plants can thrive in cold winter and still look attractive. The winterberry, also called Canada holly and black alder is one of the tough ones. Native to North America, the plant can adapt to a variety of climate and soil types. The most noticeable thing about the plant is its bright-colored array of berries, which are not just a feast for eyes, but also a key food source for numerous kinds of birds.
