'Ice Bucket Challenge' promoter Pete Frates dies at 34

Pete Frates, a former college baseball player and the inspiration behind the“Ice Bucket Challenge", died at age 34 on Monday after "a heroic battle" with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). /VCG Photo

A galaxy of celebrities followed suit by dumping themselves with a bucket of ice and cold water before pledging to donate to ALS research. Participants included Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates and even former U.S. president George W. Bush. /VCG Photo
