The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Canada has expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the remarks made by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday on the arrests of two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, in China.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, which also marks the 100th day of detention of the two Canadians, the Chinese embassy lodged solemn representations with the Canadian side.

Kovrig and Spavor were arrested by the Chinese authorities for crimes threatening China's national security, and there is no such thing as "arbitrary detention," the statement said, stressing that China is a country governed by rule of law, and Chinese judicial departments handle cases in strict accordance with the law. The lawful rights of the two arrested Canadian citizens are protected, the statement added.

Moreover, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said during a regular press conference on Tuesday that Kovrig and Spavor are in good condition and their legal rights have been guaranteed.

Rejecting the claim that the two Canadians did not have access to legal support, Hua said that officials from the Canadian Embassy had visited the arrested individuals several times.

China urges Canada to respect the rule of law and China's judicial sovereignty, and stop making irresponsible remarks, the statement added.

The statement pointed out that what Canada and the U.S. did in the Meng Wanzhou incident was to arbitrarily detain Chinese citizens and seriously violate their legitimate rights and interests. China once again urges Canada to correct its mistake and immediately release Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou and let her return to China safely, the statement added.
