Five alpine musk deer were spotted by a wildlife survey team in Giant Panda Qilian Mountain National Park in northwest China's Gansu Province last week.

As its name suggests, the alpine musk deer mostly inhabits the coniferous forest and alpine shrub at the altitude between 2,500 and 5,000 meters. It feeds on grasses, twigs and leaves.

This timid and agile creature is very picky about its living environment. Its appearance marks the good environment in the national park.

In history, the alpine musk deer used to be widespread in the Qilian Mountain. However, the animal has become endangered in the 1990s. It is now under the first-class state protection in China and listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
