Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying Wednesday said that U.S. Secretary Mike Pompeo's remarks are like "the Emperor's new clothes".
Hua made the remark at a regular press conference in response to Pompeo's Tuesday statement, accusing China of repressing religious and ethnic minority groups and undermining people's freedoms.
She noted China has made great achievements over the past 70 years since the founding of PRC. People have no fear of war or displacement.
She emphasized that the 56 ethnic groups in the country are living in harmony and 850 million people have been lifted out of poverty. The spokesperson added nearly 1.4 billion Chinese people are living in peace, freedom and happiness and the ratio of China's contribution to global GDP growth has reached over 30 percent in more than 10 consecutive years.
China has not only created a miracle in the history of human development, but also made a great contribution to the development of human rights in the world, which has been recognized throughout the world, Hua said.
By contrast, the United States not only has serious human rights problems such as racial discrimination, but also has gone out of its way to intervene in other countries' internal affairs such as pushing "color revolution" and regime change.
The U.S. provoked wars in such countries as Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, killing innocent people in the name of freedom and human rights, Hua said
The spokesperson said more rational voices are emerging in the U.S., which, she hoped, should have the wisdom to know better about itself.
