Chinese weightlifter Deng Wei claimed gold and set a new world record on Wednesday in women's 64kg division at the 2019 "Shengxin" IWF World Cup 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Qualification Event in Tianjin, China.

The Rio Olympic champion secured first place on her first attempt, lifting 108kg. She made an easy lift of 113 kg on the second attempt, and decided to challenge the world record on the third, which she did, successfully lifting up 117kg.

"Actually, it was pretty surprising that I broke the snatch world record. I had never achieved this result (117kg) before in training and competitions. As to my clean and jerk performance, it was affected by my injuries. I need to take active approaches to recover" said Deng in post-game interviews.

However, she lost to Guo Xingchun of Chinese Taipei who won gold with 141kg in women's 64kg division of clean and jerk. Deng settled for a silver with 138kg, but still won the gold of total on 255kg (117+138).

Also on Wednesday, Zhang Wanqiong of China swept women's 55kg division by winning all three gold medals, with 96kg in the snatch category, 116kg in clean and jerk, and a total on 212kg (96+116).

China's Tian Tao clinched silver with 175kg in men's 96kg division of snatch. Shortly after, Tian secured the titles of clean and jerk and the total in this division with 215kg on his first attempt. He challenged world record but failed on his attempt of 232kg, and eventually won the total with 400kg (175+225).

"Even though I'm not at my best condition right now, I felt like it doesn't hurt to give it a try. It would be more hopeful to break the record if I'm at a better condition" said Tian Tao in post-game interviews.

Chen Guiming of China won the gold medal of clean and jerk in women's 59kg division with 138kg, while Choe Hyo Sim of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) won the other two titles in this division, snatch (104kg) and the total on 242kg (104+138).
