Chen Meng edged past her compatriot Liu Shiwen 4-3 during the women's singles quarterfinals of International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour Grand Finals in Zhengzhou, central China's Henan Province, on Friday.

The Chinese number one has set up a semifinal with Japan's Mima Ito, who won Austria Open women's singles title on November 17.

After the match, Liu said it was a pity to miss a chance to face Japan's 19-year-old superstar before Tokyo 2020.

World number two and top seed Sun Yingsha was eliminated from the women's singles following her loss to fellow Chinese Wang Yidi in the round of 16.

It was a bad day for a 19-year-old Sun, as she and her partner Wang Manyu suffered a 3-2 loss to Japanese duo Miyuu Kihara and Miyu Nagasaki in the women's doubles semifinals earlier in the afternoon.

In men's singles, world number one Xu Xin and world number four Lin Gaoyuan, both from China, have already booked their spots in the men's semifinals.
