Earlier this month, a symposium marking the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the Macao SAR Basic Law was held in Beijing, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to China.
China's top legislator Li Zhanshu gave a speech at the symposium. He hailed the successful implementation of Macao Basic Law, noting that Macao's long-term prosperity and stability can better serve the national development and defend national sovereignty and security.
He said the successful practice of "One Country, Two Systems" with Macao's characteristics should be promoted in accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR.
Echoing Li's stance, Chief Executive of the Macao SAR Chui Sai On said in a recent interview that Macao has strictly abode by China's Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR, and pursued the policy of "One Country, Two Systems" and "Macao people governing Macao" with a high degree of autonomy over the past two decades.
Macao has enjoyed its fastest and best development period in history since its return to the motherland 20 years ago, and the performance of various macroeconomic indicators has been outstanding, Chui pointed out.
