Southwest China's Yunnan Province takes pride in its Yilong Lake, an ideal home for various wild birds, including a recent purple swamphen.

The purple swamphen is distinctive for its special purple feather. There are currently 500-600 purple swamphen residing in the lake. The name "swamphen" suggests that the species prefers swamps and wetlands. Though it cannot fly fast, the purple swamphen is an excellent swimmer, especially for a bird without webbed feet.

The purple swamphen is not endangered worldwide; but it is a rare species in China. Even in Yunnan's wetland ecosystem with enriched biodiversity, the purple swamphen is rarely seen. It is one of the symbolic species that indicates a good, healthy ecosystem.
