Lebanese President Michel Aoun has postponed consultations to select a new prime minister, after violent clashes erupted over the weekend in central Beirut. Smoke engulfed the city as security forces fired tear gas at protesters. Hundreds of people demonstrated near parliament on December 15. Earlier, dozens were injured during a crackdown by security forces. The unrest has been some of the most violent since protests over economic mismanagement and alleged corruption began two months ago.
