The Asia-Pacific region is home to 7.7 million people of concerns to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The number includes 3.5 million refugees, 1.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 1.4 million stateless people. The majority of refugees originate from Afghanistan and Myanmar. Up to 96 percent of all Afghan refugees have fled to neighboring Iran and Pakistan. The two countries have hosted them for more than 30 years. As of now, Pakistan hosts more than 1.4 million registered Afghans. Myanmar also presents significant challenges. An estimated 500,000 refugees from different ethnic groups have fled from ethnic conflict and violence over several decades.
