Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang on Friday said that China and EU are willing to launch joint efforts to ease nuclear tensions over Iran, promote non-proliferation and safeguard peace and stability in the Middle East.
Delegates from France, Germany and the UK met earlier with officials from the Department of Arms Control of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing to discuss the Iranian nuclear issue.
Geng Shuang said that China and the EU agreed to strengthen coordination in effectively implementing their commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The JCPOA is an agreement on the nuclear program of Iran reached in Vienna on July 14, 2015, between Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States – plus Germany).
In 2018, U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and imposed sanctions on Iran, seriously hurting Iran's economy and stoking nuclear tensions in the region.
