Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday called on China and India to enhance communication to jointly safeguard multilateralism and justice, during his meeting with India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi.
As the representatives of emerging markets, China and India are at the critical historical stage of national rejuvenation and national construction, and have extensive common strategic interests, Wang said, adding that China and India should work together to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of not only the two countries but also of all the developing countries.
He urged the two countries to strengthen confidence-building measures and cooperation in border areas, and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in border areas.
Doval said the two sides should promote mutual political trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and resolve the border issue as early as possible through dialogue and negotiation.
During the talks, the pair agreed to strengthen communication between the border defense forces of the two countries, establish a hotline between the two armies, increase border defense meeting points and expand border trade and personnel exchanges.
The two sides also agreed to hold the 23rd Meeting of the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question next year in China.
Wang and Doval are the designated special representatives of the two countries for this annual dialogue, which is the main channel for negotiations and strategic communication over the two countries' shared borders.
Wang's visit follows Chinese President Xi Jinping's informal summit with Indian Prime Minister Modi in Mamallapuram in October.
