Hoopoe, the bird with a distinctive "crown" of feathers, is a common bird species in Europe and Asia. The bird eats a lot of insects, including those that are considered as pests by humans. As such, they are very welcomed by farmers and are under protection in many countries.

The bird has a very effective and interesting anti-predator defense in the nest. The brooding female bird produces a liquid that smells like rotten meat, which can help deter predators. Besides, there are litter and feces that accumulate in the nest, which definitely do not smell attractive to intruders.

Hoopoes are loved in many countries. It's the national bird of Israel. In China, the hoopoe symbolizes peace and happiness. There are many poems praising the bird in ancient China.
