Hoopoe, the bird with a distinctive "crown" of feathers, is a common bird species in Europe and Asia. The bird eats a lot of insects, including those that are considered as pests by humans. As such, they are very welcomed by farmers and are under protection in many countries.

The bird has a very effective and interesting anti-predator defense in the nest. The brooding female bird produces a liquid that smells like rotten meat, which can help deter predators. Besides, there are litter and feces that accumulate in the nest, which definitely do not smell attractive to intruders.
