Hong Kong SAR finance head warns of bankruptcy wave after New Year

The financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has warned of a bankruptcy wave of Hong Kong businesses after the New Year amid the abating but continuous violence in the city. Paul Chan Mo-po said on Sunday that nearly 3,000 companies have filed applications for protection of bankruptcy and arrears of wages during the past 12 months. Most of the applications come from the construction sector, which saw more than 1,100 cases, with the catering services, retail, and trade sectors following.
