The long-delayed preliminary results of Afghanistan's presidential elections suggest President Ashraf Ghani may have won a second term. According to the Independent Election Commission, Ghani barely scraped above 50 percent of the preliminary count, while rival Abdullah Abdullah received 39 percent. As soon as the preliminary result was announced, Abdullah's office released a statement saying he would contest it. The election took place on September 28, and results were supposed to be announced in October. But they have been repeatedly delayed due to technical issues and allegations of fraud from candidates.
