A villager in southwest China's Yunnan Province picked up a baby macaque and mothered it for days before delivering it to the local forest public security bureau. The little monkey took him for its mother and would not tear away from the villager.
Ai Sheng, a villager in Ximeng Wa Autonomous County, found the lonely baby macaque at the roadside on his way to work. When he picked the little one up, the animal clung to Ai Sheng, and would not let him go.
"Suddenly, I heard its cry. So, I stopped my tractor and turned back for a look, and found out it was a little monkey. The moment I went up to it, the monkey came to hug me. I put it down, but it kept clinging to me," said Ai Sheng, from Daigela Village.
Ai Sheng took it back home, and the little thing just refused to leave. Ai Sheng made several tries to release it to the wild, but no sooner than he left it, the little monkey ran back to him, held his clothes, stuck to him and wouldn't let go.
Touched by its cute look, Ai Sheng assumed the responsibility of the parent, bathing, feeding and taking care of it.
Finally, Ai Sheng took the little monkey to Ximeng forestry public security bureau, where the experts identified it to be a macaque, which is under second-class state-level protection in China. The baby monkey probably got lost from its mother, as there are groups of macaques in the area where it was picked up.
"According to our observation, this macaque is very little, less than one year old. In this case, if we chose to release it back to the wild, it should not be capable to survive. So we are going to turn it over to a professional rescue center," said Wang Liying, assistant police at the Ximeng forestry public security bureau.
Now, Ximeng forestry public security bureau contacted the wildlife rescue institution, where the baby monkey will receive survival training before eventually be released back to the wild.
