The government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said the public protest on Wednesday was generally smooth and orderly. The government has always respected the residents' freedom and right to peacefully march and express their opinions, a spokesperson for HKSAR government said in a statement issued in response to New Year's Day protest.

A majority of the people expressed their aspirations in a lawful, peaceful and rational manner, according to the statement.

The spokesman urged the people to leave as soon as possible after the protest and not engage in any illegal or violent activities.

In order to maintain the rule of law and social peace, the police force will strictly enforce the law, the statement added.
