The total box office sales on the Chinese mainland in 2019 stood at 64.3 billion yuan (around 9.2 billion U.S. dollars), 5.4 percent more than the previous year.

The number is now a new annual domestic box office record, with the previous record being broken on December 13, 2019.

According to the China Film Administration on Tuesday, domestic films grossed 41.2 billion yuan (around 5.9 billion U.S. dollars) during the year, an 8.65 percent increase from last year.

China produced 1,037 films throughout the year. Of the 88 films each with box office sales of 100 million yuan, 47 were domestic films, the administration said.

Among the top 10 biggest-earning films, eight are domestic films with animation "Ne Zha" raking in five billion yuan just second to 2017's "Wolf Warrior 2" at 5.7 billion yuan.

With a surging mainland box office, director and actor Wu Jing, who starred in sci-fi blockbuster "Wandering Earth" and shot and starred in"Wolf Warrior 2," became the first actor in history whose films grossed over 15 billion yuan.
