The world's biggest winter festival, the Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival opens in Harbin, the capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The annual ice swimming tournament is an indispensable part of this festival. The 25-meter, upriver competition sees brave people swimming in the sub-zero temperatures of the Songhua River. Temperatures in the city at this time of year can plunge as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius.
