A crash involving multiple vehicles has killed five people and injured at least 60 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the U.S., AP reported citing a transportation official.

Local media said the crash happened at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday on the highway's westbound lanes in Mount Pleasant Township.

Two tractor trailers, a tour bus and passenger vehicles were involved in the pileup, Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo said in a tweet.

A "prolonged closure" of the turnpike is likely, DeFebo said.

It's not immediately clear what led to the crash. National Transportation Safety Board investigators were at the scene.
