Carrie Lam, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive, said she will work closely with the new Hong Kong liaison office chief to bring the city back on track.

Lam will meet Luo Huining, the newly appointed director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in HKSAR this week, she told reporters ahead of a weekly administrative meeting on Tuesday.

"I believe in the coming future, we will work closely with Mr. Luo to fully implement the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle and the Basic Law so as to put the city back on the right path, as Mr. Luo had said," Lam told reporters.

Luo's appointment was announced on January 4 and welcomed by Lam. The new top representative to Hong Kong made his public debut on Monday and expressed his confidence in bringing the city back on track.

Describing the new position as a new mission and challenge, Luo said that he found the half-year social unrest in Hong Kong "heart-wrenching".

The new director promised to "work with sincerity and love for Hong Kong" in the news briefing. "I believe with the efforts of Hong Kong's chief executive, the local government and various sectors in society, the Constitution and Basic Law can be fully implemented," he added in a show of support for the Chief Executive Carrie Lam and her administration.

Through his new office, Luo is expected to work with the SAR government in promoting the integration of Hong Kong into the overall development of the Chinese nation, and the positive evolution of the relationship between the Chinese mainland and the HKSAR.
