The world knows it sardonically as the "Bangkok Hilton." Thais have nicknamed it the "Big Tiger." They say once inside, it eats men alive. Bang Kwang Central Prison is no ordinary prison, but a penitentiary for the worst offenders – those who are serving life sentences and those on death row. For 15 hours each day, inmates are locked up in a 6x4-meter cell with up to 40 other inmates. The severe overcrowding takes a heavy psychological, physical and mental toll on the almost 6,000 inmates. But a new prison program is hoping to change this.
