A fresh spell of snowfall has blanketed a forest in north China's Shanxi Province, creating an expansive winter fairyland in the wooded area.

The first snow of 2020 started to hit Youyu County early Sunday and lasted until Tuesday, with white flakes enveloping pine trees as the orange tones of sea buckthorns shone through on the branches.

The forest coverage in Youyu has grown from 0.3 percent in the 1950s to over 55 percent in 2019, thanks to decades of afforestation turning the once barren land into an oasis in the desert bordering the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
