A temporary animal hospital established in the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park in South Australia has received over 300 injured animals in recent days as devastating bushfires raged across the country and caused the death of over 500 million wild animals.

Over 100 of these injured animals are koalas, and they were being treated for different severity of burns in three sections at the wildlife park.

More than 100 vets, rescuers and volunteers have gathered to provide medical help to the animals.

"I think we're up to about 13 or 14 koalas, we've brought in a kangaroo, a possum. We are not focusing on anything in particular, we're just out there searching. And whatever we're finding, we're getting back here to get the care it needs from the vets," said Australian head of Humane Society International Evan Quartermain.

The month-long bushfires have burnt more than 160,000 hectares of Kangaroo Island, one third of which is a protected wildlife reserve, while heat waves and droughts have left animals short of water and food.

"The Kangaroo Island has been through some really difficult times recently with very major bushfires. The bushfires have damaged up to half of the island's environment and caused significant impact to our beautiful and unique wildlife. The recovery of the island's environment will take several years." said South Australian Environment and Water Minister David Speirs.
