Meng Hongwei, former Chinese vice minister of public security and former head of global law enforcement organization Interpol, was sentenced to 13 years and six months in jail on Tuesday by a Chinese court for receiving bribes and abuse of official positions.

In a trial at Tianjin First Intermediate People's Court, Meng was also fined 2 million yuan (290,000 U.S. dollars).

Meng abused his previous positions in the public security ministry and the coast guard to receive more than 14.46 million yuan (2.1 million U.S. dollars) worth of assets in bribes between 2005 and 2017, the court ruled.

Meng told the court he would not appeal the judgment.

The National Supervisory Commission opened an investigation into the case at the end of 2018.
