A feast of local specialties for China's 2020 Spring Festival

The most significant Chinese holiday – Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is just around the corner, and one of the many traditions during this festive period is bringing home a famous local specialty from the city. CGTN dug up some famous portable local specialties in megacities to offer you a feast for your eyes.

Beijing 

One of the quintessential dishes to try in the Chinese capital of Beijing, the renowned Peking Roast Duck, is one of the must-have specialties to give friends and relatives. Locals say a bite of Peking Roast Duck is a must when traveling here.

Daoxiangcun Bakery, which offers authentic Beijing pastries and snacks, has deep roots in Beijing dating back over 120 years. Every year, when a public holiday or a festival approaches, locals and visitors flock to one of the Daoxiangcun's stores to bag scrumptious treats for family and friends. Lotus seed shortbread and fresh flower roses cookie are favorites.

Shanghai 

Pear-syrup candy, also known as "Ligaotang" in Chinese, is a traditional Shanghai specialty which dates back to 1855. Made with pear, tangerine peel and lemon powder, the sweet pear-syrup candy helps ease coughs and sore throats.

Another traditional specialty in Shanghai is Butterfly Cookies. Shaped like a butterfly, this crisp pastry has become one of the popular pastry gifts for friends and relatives and is especially favored by children.

Guangzhou

Crispy Chicken Biscuits, also known as the Xiao Feng Biscuits, are one of the famous snacks in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province. The snack uses a mixture of mashed mooncakes, pork and cabbage and is flavored with cream, crushed garlic, ground pepper powder, five-spice powder and salt.

Guangzhou Bacon is a time-honored favorite in Guangzhou City, especially during Chinese New Year. The homegrown pork has an unmistakable taste that reminds you of home no matter where you are.

Chengdu 

Zhang Fei Beef Jerky is one of the most famous snacks in Chengdu City, southwest China's Sichuan Province. It is named after the character Zhang Fei who is described as highly-tanned the work "Chinese Romance of the Three Kingdoms." For most residents, eating the Zhang Fei Beef Jerky is a fond memory of family togetherness.

Produced in Pixian County in Chengdu City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Pixian Doubanjiang is a bright thick brown paste, fermented with broad beans, fresh chili pepper, wheat flour and salt. The specialty is viewed by many as the soul of Sichuan cooking.

Xi'an

Food lovers are spoiled for choices in Xi'an in northwest China's Shaanxi Province as the city offers a dizzying array of local flavors and snacks. One of the famous delicious treats – Liangpi, also known as cold noodles – is sold on almost every corner of the city.

One of the popular snacks in Xi'an, Mung Bean Paste, is usually studded with dates, raisins, peanuts or walnuts and is favored by many. This snack is portable and can easily be given to friends as a festival gift.
