Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the importance of the United Nations, saying the international system with the UN as its core must be safeguarded.

Wang made the remarks on Tuesday when meeting with Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on United Nations (UN) Security Council reform, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the UN, and Joanna Wronecka, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN.

In the meeting, Wang emphasized the importance of the UN mechanism, saying the mechanism is "essential and still valid." Noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, Wang called on all parties to take this as an opportunity to review the original aspiration and mission of the establishment of the UN.

Speaking of the Security Council reform, Wang said the reform should be committed to strengthening the authority and effectiveness of the Security Council, so that it can truly assume the primary responsibility of safeguarding international peace and security.

He continued by calling for more representation of developing countries and small and medium-sized countries in order to avoid the Security Council becoming "a club of big and rich countries."
