India's top court gives nod to new citizenship law amid protests

India's top court has decided against blocking the implementation of a new citizenship law. But it has asked the government to respond to petitions that were filed against the validity of the controversial legislation. The law provides a fast track to naturalization for some migrants entering the country illegally to escape religious persecution. It has sparked widespread opposition and protests across the country, largely because it excludes Muslims.

The amendment has come up against a host of petitions, and of course the protests have been quite violent. But the Supreme Court now seems to have given it the all-clear.
