At least 22 people died and more than 1,000 other injured after a powerful earthquake struck eastern Turkey. The magnitude-6.8 quake shook Elazig province, about 550 kilometers east of the capital Ankara. Many buildings collapsed in towns near the center of the tremor, which was strong enough to be felt in several neighboring countries. The earthquake was followed by more than 270 aftershocks, 12 of which had magnitudes over 4.
