A number of popular scenic spots across China have been temporarily closed in a bid to avoid tourist gatherings and block the spread of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China has suspended the operation of all its scenic spots to tourists starting Monday, according to the local tourism development bureau.

Tibet is the only provincial region in China that hasn't reported any novel coronavirus cases. For those who have already purchased tickets for sightseeing in the region and wish to cancel their trips, they can get a refund for free, the bureau said.

Other famous tourism sites, such as the Palace Museum in Beijing, Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai, West Lake in Hangzhou, Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, Pingyao Ancient Town in north China's Shanxi Province, have also stopped opening to visitors since January 24 or 25 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The tourist attractions will remain closed to the public until further notice, authorities say.
