Two people were killed and nearly 30 injured as a high-speed train derailed near Milan at around 5:30 a.m. local time (12:30 BJT).

Pictures from the scene show that two carriages of the train were derailed and severely damaged.

Initial findings revealed that the engine went off the tracks and struck a freight wagon on a parallel track before hitting a railway building several meters away.

A rescue operation and an investigation into the cause of the accident are currently underway.
