'Responsibility, transparency, solidarity, cooperation'

The Group of 77 (G77) expresses its full support to the comprehensive efforts made by the Chinese government to contain the outbreak, and recognizes China's efforts in extending cooperation with the international community, said Guyana's UN ambassador Rudolph Michael Ten-Pow, whose country chairs the G77 for 2020, at the 58th session of the Commission on Social Development.

The G77 emphasizes that the international community should work together in a spirit of responsibility, transparency, solidarity, and cooperation and avoid discrimination, stigma, and disinformation so as to bring this outbreak under control as soon as possible.

"It's a test of political solidarity – whether the world can come together to fight a common enemy that does not respect borders or ideologies. It's a test of financial solidarity – whether the world will invest now in fighting this outbreak, or pay more later to deal with its consequences. And it's a test of scientific solidarity – will the world come together to find shared answers to shared problems?" Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday.

In his opening remarks at a two-day forum on COVID-19, Ghebreyesus thanked Chinese experts and officials who attended the forum online.

"We want you to know that we stand with you in solidarity, and we wish you courage, patience, success, and good health in these extremely trying circumstances," he said.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also hailed China's determination and efforts in combating the epidemic and expressed willingness to engage in international cooperation to curb the virus.
