Jigokudani Yaen-koen was opened in 1964, at an altitude of 850 meters. It is located in the Valley of Yokoyu River, sourced from Shiga-Kogen of the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park in northern Nagano Prefecture. The macaques have become quite famous on the internet for their bathing habit. Every winter, tourists visit the hot spring and take pictures of the macaques enjoying themselves. However, you cannot jump in the water and bathe with them - they apparently do not like to share!
