An 89-year-old New Zealand grandmother Leonie Lawson has opened her heart to the people of Wuhan by writing a special song of hope and encouragement in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
Called "Together With You," the music was composed by Leonie Lawson and sung by the Auckland Girls' Choir, who wanted to do something for Wuhan.
The lyrics (below) are designed to be uplifting and positive to capture the spirit of Chinese people fighting the disease, and Lawson said the song is a way for the choir to stretch out their hands across the miles to China and say, "We're with you, we're supporting you."
Chinese-American Jeanette Chan is the project manager and she said the girls thought that the singing was the least they could do to support Wuhan. "It's a good thing to step up and teach the girls to have courage to do something that no one else has done yet," she said.
The choir consists of a diverse range of singers from 10 different cultures, including Fijian-Indian student Aleena Joseph who said she was really proud of the recording and that it was a great opportunity for her to make a difference.
"I felt really great that we were doing something for Wuhan," she said.
Members of the choir have also signed a large banner that will be presented to the people of Wuhan. It bears many heartfelt messages, including "Dear Wuhan, Never Give Up" and "Hello Wuhan, be strong, we are thinking of you."
The banner was presented to China's Consul-General in Auckland, Ruan Ping, who said the world needs to conquer the epidemic with joint efforts, including voices from the other side of the planet.
The lyrics for "Together With You":
Wuhan we are calling you
Wuhan, Wuhan, we are calling you
Stand up, be strong, face this challenge today
We are with you, you are not alone
Stand up, be strong, we support you all the way
Together we will fight to overcome this fear
United we are strong so far from you
From New Zealand, the land of the Long White Cloud
We send our strength and Aroha
Don't give up, keep strong with us
Wuhan, Wuhan, we are calling you
