In an effort to show British people's support for China in its fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak, with the support of the British Embassy, the British Council in China published a video showing British people from different sectors – including famous artists, academics and professors – encouraging China and the epicenter Wuhan in their own unique ways.
"In the battle against COVID-19, the Chinese people's strong, brave and great efforts to control the epidemic have impressed the whole world," the British Council's statement said. "The battle against the disease is also at the heart of the British people."
British pianist Will Pickvance played traditional Chinese song "The Butterfly Lovers" on his piano in the beginning of the video. The Chinese musical composition was inspired by a Chinese folk love story.
Jane Goodall, a UN Messenger of Peace; Great Wall researcher William Lindesay; John Owen-Jones, who played Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables," and Alastair Sim, director of Universities Scotland, as well as teachers and students across UK colleges and universities all expressed their solidarity and best wishes to Chinese people.
"Wuhan and Hubei are in everyone's hearts … I just want to add my heartfelt appreciation to you all for fighting this virus," said Lindesay in the video.
"I have every confidence that China has the capability to win the battle with this virus through its concerted efforts and through its scientific endeavors," said Cathy Gormley-Heenan, deputy vice-chancellor of Ulster University.
"Here in the UK, we're watching with enormous admiration and respect for the way that the residents of Wuhan and other cities in China are coping with the situation. … We think the stoicism in the face of adversity is a real lesson to everyone," said Charley Robinson from British Universities International Liaison Association.
Sarah Horner, chief executive of Hijinx Theatre, said that she had such a fond memories of visiting Beijing, Shenzhen, Changsha and Wuhan for work in 2018. "I look forward to coming back to China with Hijinx very soon," she said in the video.
"We believe that with the joint efforts from the whole world, the fight against the epidemic will eventually come to an end," the British Council's statement said. Go China! Go Wuhan!
