New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the mortality rate of the novel coronavirus is 1.4 percent while "the normal flu's mortality rate is about 0.6 percent." Cuomo also said he hopes to have 1,000 tests per day available for New York residents within a week. Cuomo, whose state has one confirmed case, welcomed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's decision to allow New York to test for the virus that has killed more than 3,000 people worldwide since its outbreak began in China in December 2019.
