The Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau announced on Wednesday that the 2020 Macao Arts Festival scheduled in May will be postponed to next year, citing fears over the coronavirus epidemic.
The decision was taken after a careful evaluation, said the bureau in a statement. "At present, the situation of the epidemic keeps on changing and the prevention and control work in Macao is still in an important phase," it said.
The statement also pointed out that about half of the festival's programs involve participants from outside of Macao, and rehearsals of local art groups scheduled from February have also been affected.
"There are many uncertain factors in the aspects of transport, logistics and rehearsals," said the statement, noting that the bureau decided to postpone the festival "in order to protect the health and safety of the spectators and performers."
As an important cultural activity in Macao, the annual Macao Arts Festival is now into its 31st edition since it was launched in 1988. It features different art forms, including music, dance, drama, photography and handicraft exhibitions.
Previously, the bureau had announced cancellation of all its external activities scheduled for this month, with most cultural venues to remain closed until further notice.
