Chinese Premier Li Keqiang sent a congratulatory message to new Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday, calling for joint efforts to promote the two countries' cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

China and Malaysia are traditional friendly neighbors and important cooperation partners, Li said in his message, noting that bilateral relations have always maintained a good trend of development.

"I look forward to making joint efforts with you and continue to deepen the China-Malaysia comprehensive strategic partnership, strive for greater results in our BRI cooperation, and upgrade China-ASEAN cooperation and other regional cooperation mechanisms to new levels, so as to benefit the people in our two countries and the region," he added.

The China-proposed BRI comprises of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and aims to build trade and infrastructure networks that connect Asia with Europe and Africa along and beyond the ancient Silk Road routes.

Muhyiddin took office as Malaysia's new prime minister on March 1, following the abrupt resignation of 94-year-old Mahathir Mohamad, who had been in office since the general election in 2018.
