Antibiotics can help stop infections caused by bacteria. They do this by killing these microorganisms or by keeping them from copying themselves or reproducing.

However, the novel coronavirus is a virus, and only bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment, according to the World Health Organization.

People diagnosed with COVID-19 may receive antibiotics since bacterial co-infection is possible.

Other infections can be treated with antibiotics, including meningitis, strep throat, whooping cough and skin infections, according to WebMD. Antibiotics have side effects like diarrhea and vomiting. It's not suggested to take them unless necessary.
