More global sports events have been affected amid the coronavirus pandemic as of Friday, adding their mark to the already shredded 2020 sports calendar.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed on Friday to postpone the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2020 which were supposed to take place in Aarhus, Denmark from May 16-24. Instead, they will be staged on August 15-23.

The BWF has also called off the last five tournaments in the qualification period for the Tokyo Olympics, which are the Croatian International, Peru International, European Championships, Asia Championships and Pan Am Individual Championships in Guatemala City.

That made the All England Open, played from March 11-15 as the final event to count towards Olympic qualification., with rankings at the end of April deciding which players will be at the Tokyo Games.

"All five tournaments were slated to be played within the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifying period, but will no longer contribute to Olympic qualifying as they will now fall outside the qualification window," the BWF said in a statement.

The event has been tentatively postponed to August 17-30, a week after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are set to conclude, but LEN is open to other possibilities at the same time.

"At this stage it's difficult, if not impossible, to plan with a definite time frame," LEN president Paolo Barelli said in a statement.

The Hungarian organizers of the event also acknowledged challenges athletes have to face in their practice and training under such situations which are shared by all athletes either preparing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics or other major sports events.

"The participating athletes deserve the chance to have quality preparations before the big events since nowadays it's almost impossible to train properly," Hungary's minister for sports Dr Tunde Szabo said.

Men's and women's World Cup regional qualifying events, Sevens Series tournaments in London and Paris, the women's Sevens Series tournament in Langford and the final men's Sevens Challenger Series event have been postponed.
