Female polar bear Milana is a good mother; but sometimes she plays little tricks on her baby. The picture shows Milana enjoying a snack, with her back turned towards the baby. Her baby girl, still nameless, seemed to be angry and yelled at the mother to get attention.

Milana gave birth to two cubs in the German zoo in November 2019. It marks the first time that polar bear cubs have been born at the zoo. Sadly, only one of them survived. The cub immediately became the star of the zoo. With pure white fur and black beady eyes, it looks just like a walking toy.

The cub's father, Sprinter, first met Milana in 2017, when she arrived from Russia. But male polar bears do not help in parenting, so Sprinter has already gone back to his enclosure.

Zoo staff confirmed that Milana is exemplary in caring for her cub. For a month, she did not allow anyone to go anywhere near the birthing cave, nor did she leave the baby until recently. For now, Milana and her cub's well-being will be monitored through cameras that also pick up on any sounds the cub makes.

Polar bears are classified as an endangered species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are around 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears living in their natural habitat in the Arctic.
