The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea from the town of Wonsan on Sunday, Yonhap news agency reported, citing military sources in the Republic of Korea (ROK).
Both the missiles were fired northeastward from the eastern coastal city of Wonsan at 6:10 a.m. and flew around 230 kilometers at a maximum altitude of around 30 km, said ROK's Joint Chiefs of Staff, adding that ROK and U.S. intelligence authorities are analyzing other specifics.
It was the fourth round of such launches this month by the DPRK, as the world struggles with the coronavirus pandemic – and as a prolonged hiatus in disarmament talks with the United States drags on.
The last test launch was on March 21. Based on photographs released by DPRK's state media, analysts identified those weapons as KN-24 short-range ballistic missiles.
United Nations Security Council resolutions bars the DPRK from testing ballistic missiles, and the country has been heavily sanctioned over its missile and nuclear weapons programs.
Military drills were conducted this month despite a border lockdown and quarantine measures imposed in the DPRK in an effort to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19.
The DPRK has not reported any confirmed cases.
