China has defended its achievement in coronavirus containment, rejecting reports made by Australia's Daily Telegraph on China's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, saying they are "full of ignorance, prejudice and arrogance."
The Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney made the remarks in a statement published on its website on Wednesday. It posed ten questions to the Australian newspaper as the latter repeatedly published untrue reports criticizing China for its prevention work.
In the statement, the consulate-general rebutted the Daily Telegraph for frequently associating the virus with China, stressing that tracing the origin of the virus is a scientific issue. Labeling the virus and stigmatizing China does no help in containing the disease.
It highlighted China's remarkable achievement in epidemic prevention and containment, saying that China has been actively sharing information with the international community. Its efforts bought time for the whole world and this has been well recognized.
Noting the wide spread of the virus worldwide, the statement reiterated China's commitment to international cooperation, stressing that China is doing its utmost to support other severely infected countries.
The "virus respects no borders," said the statement, urging the newspaper to abandon prejudice and stop fabricating false accusations against China.
Regarding Chinese individuals or companies as a "scapegoat" for the shortage of medical supplies in Australia is ridiculous, the statement also noted.

"In January and February, overseas Chinese communities and Chinese companies donated medical supplies to China, the then epicenter of the pandemic. As the virus spreads to other countries, they are currently actively participating in various means in the prevention and control efforts in their residing country. In this sense, their efforts correspond with those of many other individuals and companies around the world who have a sense of social responsibility."
The statement also read that China has been routinely and openly updating the World Health Organization, which is the most authoritative international organization in global public health, with more than 190 members including Australia.
The WHO has noted how countries like Singapore and South Korea made use of the time China bought for the world, the Consulate-General pointed out and added, "It is groundless to blame China for delays in responses."
According to the statement, the Daily Telegraph has attended two media briefings on the epidemic held by the Chinese Consulate General.
The Consulate General questioned why the Daily Telegraph quoted several so-called "strategic analysts" and doubted statistics issued by China in disregard of the authoritative information provided by China and the WHO's professional opinions.
